A retired Marine Corps officer has formally announced he is running as a Democrat for northern Michigan’s seat in U.S. Congress. Matt Morgan of Traverse City, who retired as a lieutenant colonel in 2013, served two tours during the Iraq War.
Morgan is the first Democrat to declare in Michigan’s 1st Congressional District for the 2018 election. Rep. Jack Bergman (R-Watersmeet) was elected to his first term in office last November.
Morgan has been traveling the district talking to voters in recent weeks. He says his priority would be bringing good jobs to the area.
He told IPR News Radio in an interview that people in northern Michigan are tired of politicians telling them that the economy is strong.
“They want Michigan to be strong like they remember Michigan being strong in terms of jobs and opportunity,” Morgan said. “And frankly our legislators at the federal level have really failed to bring that opportunity back to Michigan.”
