Tammy Coxen with a shaker, making the classic cocktail The Last Word.

Now that Stateside is on Fridays, we thought we’d offer a toast to the weekend. Every once in a while TammyCoxenwith Tammy’s Tastings will tell us about a Michigan related drink.

The first is a classic cocktail called The Last Word. It was created at the Detroit Athletic Club during Prohibition.

“That’s really unusual,” Coxen said. “We like to think the drinks that we really enjoy, Manhattans, Martinis, came from that speakeasy era, but actually most of those were created before Prohibition,” Coxen added.

The recipe:

1 part Green Chartreuse

1 part Gin

1 part Maraschino liqueur

1 part Lime juice

Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

The Last Word.

The Last Word is an equal parts cocktail. To make just one, try ¾ ounce for each ingredient.

“One of the things I love about The Last Word is how balanced it is,”Coxensaid, adding “We combine these four really disparate ingredients and when they come together the really balance each other nicely.”

Coxen describes the drink as bright, flavorful notes and then a lot of herbal and earthy complexity underneath.
