Satoshi Tomiie released his first house track, the all-timer "Tears" with Frankie Knuckles, more than 25 years ago. When a musician's first impression is basically perfection — and "Tears" is just that — it can define, even overshadow, the rest of a career.
But the Japanese DJ has stayed busy ever since, mostly remixing or spinning at clubs around the world, while every so often releasing new original material. Tomiie released just his second full-length album, New Day, last month, and it's got plenty of deep analog jams — a bit of a surprise for someone with official remixes of Michael Bolton and Mariah Carey to his credit.
"Thursday, 2AM" is the most immediate track on New Day, anchored by a warped synthesizer melody that's simple enough to function as an anthem. Tomiie doesn't wear out his welcome and soon moves on to deeper pastures, but as he's keenly aware, first impressions have a way of leaving their mark.
