Running for First: U.P. Democrat leaves congressional race

Aaron Selbig

An Upper Peninsula Democrat has withdrawn from northern Michigan’s race for U.S. Congress.

Northern Michigan University professor Dwight Brady made the announcement this week. Brady teaches multimedia journalism and media law at NMU and lives in a suburb of Marquette called Harvey.

“It’s a lot to do to hold down a full-time job and do all the fundraising and campaigning that is necessary,” Brady says. “But I must say that I had a great summer campaigning throughout the district from Gogebic County all the way down to Alcona County.”

Brady says he made the decision partially because he was behind in fundraising.

“I was very focused on getting the message out and probably got started just a little too late with the fundraising,” Brady says. “And once that happens it’s hard to catch up.”

The only Democrat left in the race at this point is Matt Morgan, a retired Marine Corps officer who lives in Traverse City.

Brady says he’s not yet endorsing Morgan.

Republican Rep. Jack Bergman is running for re-election in a district he won with nearly 55 percent of the vote in 2016.
