Press 'pause' on Pine Street development, says mayor

Traverse City’s mayor wants a timeout on plans to build a nine-story development downtown.

The city commission is set to hear public comment about the mixed-use project Monday night. But opponents have asked a judge to stop the process until Traverse City residents can vote on it directly.

Mayor Jim Carruthers says he fears the city could get caught up in a lengthy – and expensive – court battle.

“We should pause and wait for a judge or wait for a decision since this has gone to court," he says. "It’s sad that it ended up there but then again, should we be moving forward if legal challenges have been brought before us?”

Carruthers says most city residents he’s talked to are against the project. A hearing is scheduled for tomorrow Friday afternoon.
