Musings on Perigee Moon in Taurus: this week on The Storyteller's Night Sky

You've undoubtedly heard the November Full Moon referred to as the "super moon", because it is the closest Full Moon to Earth in nearly 70 years. But what does that mean?

The Moon's orbit around the Earth is not a circle, it's an ellipse, which means the Moon-Earth distance is always changing.

The technical name for the Moon closest to Earth is "perigee Moon". A perigee Moon can be 50,000 km closer than an apogee Moon, which is the Moon furthest away from us.

It's important to bear in mind that every month, as the Moon orbits the Earth, it comes to perigee, but it's not always at full phase when it gets there. Nonetheless, every year one of the Full Moons will be closest, and it will be called the perigee Moon.

To find the story in this Moon, it helps to consider where it is in the sky. This particular perigee Moon will be in front of the stars of Taurus, where we find the star cluster of the Pleiades and the bull's eye star Aldebaran. In ancient wisdom, Taurus ruled the region of the larynx in the human being, and because of this it was always deeply connected with language and the human being's use of words. Like in the Genesis story of Adam, where this power of speaking is indicated by the description that whatsoever he names a thing, so shall it be...

Now, because the Moon is our closest celestial companion, and it's really leaning in on us right now, you could say this super Moon in Taurus means that our words and what we speak at this time is being amplified ~ which is another way of saying we should choose our words wisely,  and with compassion at this time!

Also in ancient tradition, Full Moon held sway for at least two weeks, until the next New Moon, which for us will be November 29.

Until then, we can think on this from John Lennon:

"Say the word and you'll be free
Say the word and be like me
Say the word I'm thinking of
Have you heard the word is love?
It's so fine, it's sunshine
It's the word, love..."
