Michigan’s juvenile justice system treats kids differently county by cash-strapped county

Michigan youth have been caught in a juvenile justice system that doesn't work equally across the state, Paul Elam says.

Governor Rick Snyder has suggested Michigan should restructure the state’s juvenile justice system. However, little has been done.

Paul Elam, president of Public Policy Associates and an advocate for juvenile justice, recently wrote an opinion piece in Bridge Magazine, which indicated the youth in the juvenile justice system don’t have the luxury of time.

Elam joined Stateside to discuss the lack of fairness in Michigan’s juvenile justice system, how the legislature and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services can fix disparities between counties, and what reforms have worked.
