A gesture to astonish the world

This week the constellation of the herdsman is setting, the hunter is rising, and the Moon will cascade down a stairway of morning planets like Cinderella come to the ball.

And that's not all! In true fairy tale fashion, there's also a dragon stirring, just to punctuate this week's star picture and to remind us that when the world gets heavy with the news of the day, the sky overhead is rich with images of eternal striving and victory.

So where specifically should you look to find all of this week's sky activity? In the west, just after sunset, Arcturus is setting. It is unmistakably the brightest object in the evening sky this week, and it's also one of the oldest known named stars in the history of humanity. It belongs to the constellation of the herdsman, Bootes.

If you're an early riser, then the constellation for you this week is Orion, one of the most beloved constellations around the world. Orion is the hunter.

The most beautiful apparition awaits the dawn sky gazer, where the waning crescent moon will spend the week diving toward the Sunlight, but not without first paying a visit to Venus, Mars, and Jupiter. This will be especially beautiful on Thursday, October 8th.

Not to be outdone, the constellation of the dragon, Draco, gets into the game with a potential meteor shower overnight Thursday to Friday. Start looking for these slow moving meteors once it gets dark and notice that the dragon is always overhead, coiling around the North Star.

If that's too much star talk to take in all at once, you can visit the Interlochen website for more details, and remember, that even Atlas gets reprieve from the weight of the world, so why not the rest of us?

Arcturus can be seen setting in the west after sunset. Orion is rising in the East starting as early as 1 am.
The Moon sweeps past the planets Venus, Mars and Jupiter starting Thursday October 8, one hour before sunrise.
The Draconid Meteor Shower peaks overhead overnight Thursday to Friday, October 8 to 9.
