DSO Strike: Talks Resume

By Noah Ovshinsky, WDET

Talks are scheduled to resume tomorrow between striking musicians and Detroit Symphony Orchestra management. This will be the first time the two sides have formally met at the negotiating table since late November.

For the last several weeks the labor dispute has been at a stalemate. That changed when DSO management accepted the outlines of a proposal pushed by Jennifer Granholm and Senator Carl Levin. The plan essentially splits the difference between the compensation demands put forward by management and the musicians.

The proposal is bringing the parties together, but talks will likely be anything but easy. Disagreements remain over proposed changes to work rules and other issues. The relationship between the players and senior executives such as CEO Ann Parsons have also grown increasingly strained as the strike stretches into its 16th week.
